Winter Gear List
Salsa Mukluk with upgrades: - I have the 2014 version with the rigid fork. I don't really need a squish fork for my purposes.
Salsa Wideloader Rear Rack - great for carrying panniers and a 30L SealLine drybag on top.
Salsa Woodchippers handlebars - Very comfortable on long rides. Takes time to get used to on snow
SRAM Rival Road Shifters - double tap makes shifting a joy
SRAM X-9 rear derailleur - Long version so the chain doesn't get too loose in some gearing ratios
SRAM 10-speed cassette - larger big ring for better climbing and dealing with heavy loads
Cane Creek Thudbuster LT - washboard roads are now comfortable
Brooks B-17 - broken in about 2 years ago. extra layer of comfort with the thudbuster.
Barmitts Roadie version - A must during the cold months.
Poler Stuff Panniers - comes with a rain cover. Works well in smoother road conditions. I usually carry spare clothes and gear inside a 5L SealLine drybag for an extra layer of protection.
Feet:
Pearl Izumi Attack Low Sock - Base Layer
Pearl Izumi ELITE Tall Wool Sock - Outer Layer
Shimano SH-MW81 - SPD compatible Winter Cycling Shoes
Hands:
Ibex Merino Glove Liner
Pearl Izumi Thermal Conductive Glove
Either one of these gloves work fine on their own inside the barmitts, although I prefer the Pearl Izumis in Screaming Yellow for visibility. I wear both on days where the temp is below 0 F.
Body:
I have found that Ibex makes some spectacular clothing for cold weather and outdoor activities.
Ibex Woolies 150 Boxer Brief
Ibex Woolies 150 Bottoms
Ibex Woolies 150 Crew
Ibex Arrivee Bib - I put this on over the long underwear for easy teardown when I get to my destination. I have yet to encounter "swamp ass" when wearing my layers in this fashion.
Ibex Breakaway II Jacket
Ibex Breakaway II Pant
I occasionally add a polyester onesie layer by Stoic on top of the merino layer if the cold bites too much.
Head:
Coldavenger Balaclava Face Mask - This thing is great. It comes with a detachable face cover
Giro Bad Lieutenant helmet - sadly discontinued, but Giro makes plenty of other nice snow helmets
Oakley Racing Jacket - I have a wonky RX for glasses, but these frames can still accommodate. I really like the option for switching out lenses and you can attach a strap to the ends of the temple arms to keep them secured to your face.
